Bhaktapur Durbar Square – Medieval Temples, Palaces, Museums – Enlisted As a World Heritage Site


Bhaktapur Durbar Square is situated within the center of Bhaktapur metropolis. Bhaktapur Durbar Square is bigger in area than Kathmandu Durbar Square and less crowded compared to Patan Durbar Square. The Lion Gate Was Constructed by King Bhupatindra Malla in the 17th century. The Lion Gate is guarded on each side by big statues of lions and from 2 stone figurines of Lord Bhairab along with Goddess Ugrachandi. It is said that the sculptor who left such figurines had his arms cut off so that he could barely duplicate those masterpieces. Even the Golden Temple, that has been built by King Ranjit Malla, includes a graphic of Goddess Kali and Garuda (the mythical gentleman chicken ) towards the top. The memorial includes a exhibit of Hindu and Buddhist paintings, paubha (paintings on cloth) and alloy, rock and woodcrafts. The Memorial is open everyday except for Tuesdays. Vatsala Temple at Bhaktapur that has been assembled by King Jagat Prakash Malla, can be a beautiful Shikhara type temple. This temple which is devoted to the mommy Goddess has a strong resemblance to the Krishna Mandir at Patan.
